Importance of GPU

CPU (Central Processing Unit) has been called the brains of PC. But Increasingly, that brain is enhanced by another part of the PC – the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Processing of graphics in done in two ways – Integrated Graphics and Dedicated Graphics. Integrated Graphics comes integrated with CPU, and it can handle some basic graphics like opening a photo or low-resolution video or Microsoft power point. But When it comes to playing high-end games, rendering videos for Youtube we need a separate section to handle the graphics and there comes the dedicated Graphics Card. It is the section purely dedicated to processing the graphics of your computer. Now you know, if you are a Gamer or a Video maker, you definitely need to have a dedicated graphics card in your system.

Speaking about Laptops and PCs NVIDIA and AMD's Radeon are the best Graphics Card currently available in the market. Our modern day smartphone also needs graphics processing, therefore a small Graphics processing unit is placed on SOC (System on a chip). Mali, Adreno, PowerVR are the available GPUs for a smartphone in the market.

GPU was originally used primarily for 3D game rendering. But now its capabilities are being harnessed in many other fields. In today’s PC, the GPU can take on many tasks such as accelerating Adobe Flash video, translating video between different formats, image recognition, virus pattern matching and much more. GPUs is also being harnessed in enhancing the AR and VR experience.

Architecturally, CPU is composed of few cores and a small amount of cache memory that can handle few software threads at a time. In contrast, GPU is composed of 100+ cores to process thousands of threads at a time. The GPU with 100+ cores can accelerate some software by 100x over a CPU. The GPU achieves this acceleration while being more power and cost efficient than CPU.The combined power of CPU and GPU can give you a great experience primarily in high-end gaming and video editing.

This was a brief overview of how important GPUs are in our modern day PCs, laptops, and Smartphones. Finally, Thank You.
