What is Dolby Atmos? How it is enhancing our listening Experience?

You have definitely watched movies in 3D wearing those 3D Glasses. It gives you a feel of another dimension and you feel like you are actually present there. Well, our technology is advancing at a superb rate than we have ever thought of. The technology which I am going to talk about in this post is Dolby Atmos. Do you think 3D video experience can be great without 3D Audio experience? Definitely not. And you guessed it right Dolby Atmos is providing the same 3D audio experience to us.

Dolby Atmos is 360o Audio experience to users. It’s a setup in which there are multiple speakers installed all around you. Speakers at the front, back, to all the floor sides and even on the ceilings on all sides to provide us something magical.   Can you relate to this amazing placement of speakers all around you? Let me give you an example. Say you are watching a movie, the scenario of the movie is like a car is coming from the right with full speed and the breeze opposes it. Also, a The helicopter is flying at the top. So, if are watching this scene and hearing it on the normal setup i.e mono audio setup, all the sound will be mixed and you will get to hear all the sound from one speaker in a monotone. But, when you are in a Dolby Atmos setup, the right speaker will emit only the sound of the car, the left will emit the sound of the breeze and the speakers installed on the ceiling above you will emit the sound of helicopters. Also, the sound will switch from one to another speaker same as in the direction of the helicopter. And this will give you an amazing 3D experience as you are totally present in the scene.

Presently, Dolby Atmos technology is present in almost all INOX, FAME, and all High-end Cinema halls. Cinema halls use up to 64 speakers in providing you the rich experience. And yes, Dolby Atmos output will only be implemented if the particular movie or scene is shot in a Atmos setup. Well, you can also implement this rich experience in your home. You just need to have an extra AVR (Audio/Video Receiver) hardware along with the speakers. AVR decodes the Atmos audio and switches it accordingly to all the speakers installed. The speakers emit sound beams that hit the ceiling and reflects. And all speakers make a sound bubble giving you a richer experience.

Dolby Atmos is definitely the future of Sound cinema. And there will be lots of improvement in this technology by Dolby in the years to come. This post just intends just to tell the reader a basic overview about Dolby Atmos and not the technical details.

I hope now you know how you get that rich experience of sound in cinema halls. Finally, Thank you.
